The Cottage is ideally located for guests who want to explore this part of Uttarakhand’s Kumaon region – Ranikhet, Almora, Kausani, Binsar, Jageshwar, Dwarhaat among others – and do not want the disturbance of overcrowded hill stations with parking issues. The Cottage also offers a break in journey, a mid-way halt, for those travelling to places at higher altitudes, beyond Almora or Ranikhet. Guests can also make Nandini their central stay point and drive down to these places during day time, returning to the Cottage by evening for a peaceful sleep among the calm surroundings, ready for another day-time trip the next morning. The various places of attraction within approximately 15 minutes to 2-3 hour drive from the Cottage are as follows :
SitlaKhet : about 11 km,15 to 20 minute drive. This sleepy village with a one street market, is located off the Almora – Ranikhet circuit, and has a vintage Forest Rest House that was built in 1873 by the British. Sitlakhet is rich in flora and fauna and the hills and jungles around the village are said to house more than 100 species of birds. One can go for a hiking in the surrounding forest.
Katarmal Sun temple complex : 15 km, 25 minutes drive. Dedicated to Sun God, this temple complex is among the 4 such Sun temples in India – the most famous being the Konark Sun Temple in Orissa. Constructed of stones by Katyuri kings, the complex is believed to be 1,100 years old and as per folklore was built in a single night. The temple complex is the best kept secret of this region and not much visited by the tourists till recently when it became accessible by road. It’s a heritage site protected under the Archaeological Survey of India and is a must-visit place.
Ranikhet: about 19 km to the west of the Cottage, 25 to 30 minutes drive. A heritage cantonment town built by British in 1869, this beautiful hillside town is the regimental centre of the Kumaon Regiment and the Naga Brigade. The town is famous for the Kumaon Regimental Centre’s Army Museum, Jhula Devi Temple (10 minutes from Ranikhet), Chaubatia Gardens – famous for Apple orchards (20 minutes from Ranikhet), Tweed factory run by Army near Narsingh ground (purchase here locally made products and woollen clothing made by war widows and local NGOs). On the way to Ranikhet one can also stop at the famous Golf ground, the setting for many Bollywood movies, and visit Kalika Devi temple devoted to Goddes Kali adjacent to the Golf ground. As you enter Ranikhet do not forget to visit the War Memorial in the Somnath Ground that mentions all the martyrs of Kumaon Regiment who have laid down their life for the country. One can also visit the famous HaidaKhan Ashram near Chinyanaula, 4 km from Ranikhet.
Almora: about 28 km to the east of the Cottage, 1 hour drive. This cultural hub of the Kumaon region was the capital of Chand dynasty. One of the oldest cities of Uttarakhand, Almora has many places of historical importance.
Chitai Golu Dev temple: about 36 km, 1 hr 10 minute drive (9 km from Almora). Dedicated to Gollu or Goljyu Devta an Avtar (incarnation) of Lord Shiva in the form of Gaur Bhairav. Revered in Kumaon as the God of Justice, Golu Devta receives hand written letters and court stamped petitions each day from devotees seeking divine blessings and justice. The temple constructed in 12th century during the Chand dynasty rule is adorned with thousands of handwritten letters, stamped petitions, and equal number of brass bells of various sizes offered by devotees as mark of their immense gratitude after wish fulfilment.
Kausani: about 40 km, 1 hour 30 minutes drive. Famous for its panoramic stunning 300 km view of the Himalayas and Anasakti Ashram where Gandhi ji stayed for few days in June 1929. Gandhi ji was mesmerised by its serene beauty. Hindi poet laureate Sumitranandan Pant was born at Kausani and there is small museum in his memory. Kausani is a must-visit place in the Kumaon hills
Jageshwar Dham: about 58 km, 2 hours drive. A cluster of more than 100 stone temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and Parvati, Jageshwar Dham, nearly 1000 years old, Is a heritage site protected under the Archaeological Survey of India.
Binsar Wild Life sanctuary: about 48 km, 1 hour and 40 minute drive. Perched at an elevation of 2,420 metres Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected wildlife forest comprising dense oak, rhododendron and pine forests.
Kasar Devi Temple : about 31 km, 1 hour drive. It is believed that the spot surrounding the Kasar Devi Temple features an enormous geomagnetic field, due to gaps in bands of radiation. That’s the reason why Kasar Devi is believed to possess cosmic energy that is similar to that of Peru’s Machu Picchu and UK’s Stonehenge. Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens, Guru Dutt, Zohra Segal, DH Lawrence, George Harrison visited and fell in love with Kasar Devi.
Dwarahat : about 40 and 1.20 hour drive to the north. Home to 55 odd ancient temples built in the medieval ages by the Katyuri Kings, Dwarhat is famous for Doonagiri temple dedicated to goddess Durga (14 km from Dwarahat). It is believed that when Hanuman Ji was carrying the mountain with ‘Sanjiwani buti’ for Laxman, a piece of it fell here and since that day this place is known as ‘Doonagiri’ (‘’giri’’ meaning fell in hindi). 25 Kms away from Dwarhat is located Mahavatar Babaji cave in Kukuchina, Dunagiri mountain. Mahavatar Babaji cave is one of the most spiritual cave in Himalayan region, and the origin of Kriya Yoga. It is said that in this cave, Yoga Guru Lahiri Mahasaya got Kriya Yoga teachings directly from Mahaavtar Baba ji.

Kainchi Dham: The famous Kainchi Dham of Neem Karoli Baba is about 56 km from the cottage and can be visited on the way to the Cottage from Kathgodam/ Pantnagar or Nainital.
Nainital: The lake city of Nainital is about 75 km from the Cottage. Guests visiting Nainital and planning to travel to higher altitude locations can make a mid-way halt of 2-3 days at the Cottage and soak in nature’s splendour away from overcrowded hill towns.
Bhimtal: Another lake town, Bhimtal is also about 75 km from the Cottage. Guests visiting our cottage from Kathgodam or Pantnagar side can have a mid-way halt at Bhimtal.
Jim Corbett National Park : The world famous Jim Corbett Park is about 95 km from the Cottage. In case you are visiting Jim Corbett Park before traveling to the Cottage then you need not travel to Kathgodam to come to our Cottage as there is an alternative road from Ramnagar (Jim Corbett park) to Ranikhet via Bhatrojkhan.
